WHAT IS A FUSION REACTION & WHY IS CONFINEMENT NECESSARY?
Fusion is the process that powers the sun and all stars. It occurs when two isotopes of hydrogen or other low atomic number isotopes combine, or “fuse”, to form a heavier atom. To make fusion happen, atoms must be heated to very high temperatures (100 to 150 million degrees C) so that they have sufficient energy to enable fusion. Besides temperature, the ionized atoms must be held together long enough to fuse together, i.e. the atoms must be heated and confined long enough in order for fusion to occur with significant net yield of energy.
